Autel MK808S Review: What It Can & Can’t Do in a Real Shop

I’ve been running an independent repair shop for years, and I’ve used plenty of diagnostic tools along the way. After using the Autel MaxiCOM MK808S in the shop, I’d say it’s a very practical choice for DIYers and independent shops on a budget, as long as you understand that ECU coding, advanced IMMO work, and newer CAN FD/DoIP diagnostics are outside its comfort zone.

Who It Is For

I’d recommend the MK808S for serious DIYers, used-car buyers, mixed-fleet owners, and independent repair shops that want one affordable scanner for everyday diagnostic work.

If European coding, advanced immobilizer work, or newer vehicle protocols are regular jobs for you, I’d move up to a higher-end tool such as Autel MK900BT, MK906 Pro2-TS, etc.

Real Workshop Experience

Full-System Scanning

This is one of the things I use most. The full scan gives me a quick picture of the car before I start chasing individual faults.

For used cars and unknown problems, that’s a big time saver.

Bidirectional Tests

The active tests are genuinely useful. I can command pumps, solenoids, fans, valves, and other components when supported.

The catch? A function showing in the menu doesn’t always mean it will run perfectly. I’ve had tests stall or fail halfway. That’s not just an Autel problem — you’ll see the same thing with many multibrand tools in this price range.

Live Data & Graphing

Live data is solid for normal diagnosis, and the graphing is useful when I need to watch a sensor signal rather than stare at numbers.

The 7-inch screen gets cramped quickly, especially when comparing several PIDs.

Service Functions

This is probably where the Autel MK808S saves the most routine time.

Oil reset, EPB, BMS, SAS, TPMS, injector registration and throttle relearn are easy enough to get to. The dedicated Service menu is also handy for quick jobs.

ECU Coding

This is the big wall.

The MK808S can perform active tests, but it is not an ECU coding tool. If I’m replacing and configuring a BCM or coding a European module, I reach for something else.

CAN FD / DoIP

This is another limitation I’d consider before buying. The MK808S doesn’t have full native CAN FD/DoIP capability. You can add a CAN FD adapter for around $120 and cover some applications, but I see that as a workaround rather than a built-in solution.

For older and mid-generation vehicles, this isn’t a major issue. If you’re regularly working on newer platforms, I’d rather have a tool with those protocols built in.

FCA Security Gateway

For late-model FCA vehicles, the subscription matters.

The MK808S can work with supported gateway functions while the required service access is active. If you regularly work on Mopar vehicles, I’d include that ongoing cost in the buying decision.

EVAP & Key Work

EVAP testing is one area where I still want a smoke machine nearby.

The MK808S can handle some basic key and immobilizer functions, but I wouldn’t buy it as a dedicated IMMO tool. Serious BMW, Mercedes, VW, or all-keys-lost work needs different equipment.

Strengths vs Limitations

Strengths Limitations
Full-system diagnostics No ECU coding
Useful bidirectional tests Limited CAN FD / DoIP capability
Good live data and graphing 7-inch screen feels small
Useful service functions EVAP testing can be inconsistent
Wired OBD connection FCA gateway access depends on subscription
Broad mixed-fleet coverage Limited advanced IMMO capability
Reasonable shop price No oscilloscope

I actually prefer the wired connection in a shop. There’s one less Bluetooth VCI to lose, charge, or leave in another car.

The hardware is basic, too. The case isn’t fancy and the charging port feels dated, but neither has caused me a problem in actual use.

Would I Buy It Again?

Yes.

For everyday diagnostics across a mixed fleet, the MK808S does enough of the work I actually need to justify keeping one around. I wouldn’t use it as my only tool for European coding, advanced IMMO, or newer-vehicle diagnostics, but that’s not what I’d buy it for in the first place.
